Happy Polychaete Day!!!

The International Polychaete Day has been celebrated on the 1st of July 2016 as a tribute to Dr Kristian Fauchald (1 Ιουλίου 1935 - 4 Απριλίου 2015) who was a great researcher in the field of Polychaete Taxonomy and worked for many years in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, USA.
  
The LifewatchGreece team in HCMR  has organised a day full of surprises in the Cretaquarium in order to celebrate this day and to attract the interest of people on these marine animals. Activities such as kids drawing, puzzle solving, polychaete-cake tasting, watching 3D-worms in augmented reality and many more were organised.

1st Data Workshop "Data Driven World"

The 1st Data Workshop " Data Driven World" has been organised by the Open Knowledge Greece in Heraklion, Crete during 3-5 June 2016 in order to bring data sciences in contact with representatives from media, journalists, education, public health, public institutions, business and politics.

Dr Christos Arvanitidis, the scientific corrdinator of LifewatchGreece, was invited to present the national Infrastructure LifewathcGreece and its applications, vLabs and e-Services. The presentation can be found below. 

LifewatchGreece: organization of the WoRCS global workshop

On 22nd-25th February 2016, eight experts on marine and anchialine cave faunas gathered at the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), host institute of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), for the first editor workshop of the World Register of marine Cave Species (WoRCS).

The general aim of this initiative is to create a comprehensive taxonomic and ecological database of species known from marine and anchialine cave environments worldwide. The creation of this database will allow for an accurate assessment of the diversity and distribution of such faunas, and will provide information vital for evidence-based conservation.
The workshop can definitely be labeled as highly successful: during the hands-on session, no less than 900 species known to occur in cave environments have been added to the database.

LifewatchGreece in ActionMed

Dr Christos Arvanitidis, the scientific cordinator of LifeWatchGreece, participated to the First Activity 1 Workshop of the project ActionMed in Athens, over 22-24 February, 2016. The potential links between the two projects, as well as the incorporation of the lessons learnt in EMBOS COST ACTION were discussed within the biodiversity indicators topic in the framework of ActionMed project.

New publication: Salinity is the major factor influencing the sediment bacterial communities in a Mediterranean lagoonal complex (Amvrakikos Gulf, Ionian Sea)

A new publication with the title "Salinity is the major factor influencing the sediment bacterial communities in a Mediterranean lagoonal complex (Amvrakikos Gulf, Ionian Sea)" has been launched within the context of the LifeWatchGreece project during January 2016. This publication is an article in Marine Genomics and the full text can be found here (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1874778716300058).

Ecological Niche Modeling Workshop

The Ecological Modeling vLab of the LifewatchGreece project comprises of two online models. One of these models is the Ecological Niche Modeling which aims to predict the invasion risks of Indo-Pacific fish species in the Mediterranean Sea. Currently, there is no biological risk assessment done to estimate potential impacts on Mediterranean coastal ecosystems. A pilot project, done in association with partners of EU BON European project and led by HCMR in collaboration with FORTH, FIN, and the University of Gothenburg, UGOTH), will follow up on the work of Leidenberger et al. (2015) on applying ecological niche modeling in invasive species risk assessment, by using a sound number of candidate species and incorporating socioeconomic data.

Data Analysis Workshop

The LifeWatch Data Analysis Workshop (http://www.lifewatch.be/en/lifewatch-data-analysis-workshop) took place in Oostende, Belgium, from 26-27th November, 2015, and was focused on training students and researchers on e-Infrastructures and virtual environments of the LifeWatch project, through theoretical as well as practical/hands-on training sessions. Dr Anastasis Oulas represented HCMR, as part of LifeWatch Greece and taught a session on “Data exploration, processing and analysis (LifeWatch Greece RvLab)”. Moreover, he participated in discussions centered on interactions and collaborations of LifeWatch Greece with LifeWatch Belgium in the framework of the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI).
 

EGI Community Forum 2015

The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) Community Forum 2015 took place in Bari, Italy between 10-13 November, 2015, and was focused on Building Next Generation e-Infrastructures through Communities. Mrs Emmanouela Panteri represented HCMR with LifeWatchGreece e-Infrastructure in the EGI LifeWatch Competence Centre workshop where she presented the  LifewatchGreece Portal: Semantic web with Data services, Parallelizing R with RvLab, Manipulating specimens with MicroCT in the section "Advances in EGI LifeWatch Competence Center".

ECSA General Assembly

Many scientists and experts from Europe, USA and Australia met from 28th to 30th October in Barcelona to celebrate the third edition of the General Assembly of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA). Mrs Emmanouela Panteri from HCMR represented LifeWatchGreece in the ECSA General Assembly by demonstrating the CIGESMED Citizen Science project and it's involvement with LifeWatchGreece mobile application.
