The 8th IHO-IAG ABLOS Conference “UNCLOS: Advances in Governing the Blue World” (http://www.ablosconference.com/) was held in Monaco (seat of the International Hydrographic Organization – IHO), from the 20th to the 22nd of October 2015.

Dr. Tilemachos Bourtzis participated in the Conference with a presentation titled “The Role of Marine Data in Advancing Development”, presenting the theory on the subject and the LifewatchGreece Infrastructure as an example of Good Practices in the application of contemporary approaches to data use and management.

13th ICZEGAR

The 13th International Congress on the Zoogeography and Ecology of Greece and Adjacent Regions (ICZEGAR) was held in Herakleion, Crete between 7 and 11 of October, 2015. The congress' scope included all issues related to systematic, phylogeny, biogeography, ecology, evolution, and conservation on animal species in the eastern Mediterranean region. Research concerning all aspects of animal biodiversity (terrestrial, subterranean, freshwater and marine) within a geographical region that includes the Balkan and Italian peninsulas, Asia Minor and Anatolia, as well as the Near East and the Mediterranean coasts of north-eastern Africa was presented.

The LifewatchGreece team participated in the conference with 8 oral presentations and 9 posters. More details can be found in the Book of Abstracts.

First Workshop IODE - Expanding OBIS with environmental data

Mrs Matina Nikolopoulou from the LifewatchGreece core team participated in the First Workshop IODE - Expanding OBIS with environmental data that took place in Oostende, Belgium at 5 - 7 October 2015.

Expanding OBIS with environmental data is a small-scale pilot project. The main objectives of this project are to ensure mixed data sets stay together,  to demonstrate that OBIS nodes, which hold mixed data sets, can collaborate on the joint management and exchange of biodiversity observation data including environmental measurements, and to show what the benefit of this approach is for marine sciences, biological analysis and modeling.

Euromarine Foresight Symposium "Future Coast - Europe"

The Euromarine Foresight Symposium "Future Coast - Europe" (http://www.io-warnemuende.de/future-coast-home.html) was held in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), from the 5th to the 7th of October 2015.
Dr Christos Arvanitidis participated in the symposium and presented an new approach for the integrated management of coastal ecosystems supported by the LifewatchGreece Infrastructure.

European Researchers' Night

The European Researchers' Night celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015. All the events took place - simultaneously - on 25 September, in 280 cities across Europe and beyond. The Hellenic Centre of Marine Research, again this year welcomed the Researcher's Night at Rhodes island with many games, photography, painting, poster, experiments and visits to laboratories, at the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes. LifeWatch Greece team participated actively to this event by presenting part of the LifewatchGreece portal, including MicroCT and RvLAB for educational purposes.

50th European Marine Biology Symposium on Helgoland

The 50th European Marine Biology Symposium (http://www.awi.de/embs50) was held in Helgoland (Germany) between the 21st and 25th of September 2015. Dr Christos Arvanitidis, coordinator of LifeWatchGreece, presented the aims and scope of the project to the congress participants'. In addition, Dr Arvanitidis presented the R Virtual Laboratory (R vLab) and its optimized functions for analysis of ecological community data. Furthermore, one of the sessions in the symposium was dedicated to the EMBOS project (http://embos.info/). In that session, Dr Arvanitidis presented an analysis of the structural vs functional patterns in the European soft bottom communities, using data derived from the EMBOS project and the analytical tools of the RvLab.

MTSR 2015: 9th Metadata and Semantics Research Conference

The ninth International Conference on Metadata and Semantics Research (MTSR'15), that was hosted in Manchester Metropolitan University, on 9 - 11 of September 2015, aimed to bring together scholars and practitioners that share a common interest in the interdisciplinary field of metadata, semantics, linked data and ontologies. Dr Panagiotis Papadakos from the Lifewatch Greece Team of FORTH presented "Species Identification through Preference-enriched Faceted Search", a work based on the Preference-enriched Faceted Search system Hippalus. The paper was presented in the "Semantic Web and Metadata Extraction, Modelling, Interoperability and Exploratory Search" session of the conference.

EGI-LifeWatch meeting

The EGI-LifeWatch meeting was organized by the Competence Center in the Instituto de Física de Cantabria in Santander between the 2nd and 4th of September 2015. During the meeting the progress of the ESFRI construction was analyzed, the next actions were discussed and the following topics were specifically addressed: 1) Pattern recognition tools for Citizen Science, 2) Data flow handling, from the instrumentation to the repositories, 3) Use of R-tools, 4) Workflows: Galaxy and TRUFA.

The LifewatchGreece Project Coordinator, Dr Christos Arvanitidis, presented The R Virtual Laboratory (R vLab) and Mrs Emmanouela Panteri from HCMR also presented the MicroCT Virtual Laboratory (MicroCT vLab). The R vLab and the MicroCT are primary components of the LifewatchGreece Infrastructure, which are currently under development within the context of the LifeWatch ESFRI Project.

useR! 2015 in Aalborg, Denmark
