The Kick off meeting of the project RECONNECT: «Regional cooperation for the transnational ecosystem sustainable development» was organised by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) at 8-9/11/2017 in Heraklion, Crete.
RECONNECT aims to develop strategies for the sustainable management of Marine Protected Areas and Natura 2000 areas in the Balkan and Mediterranean regions. The total duration of the project is 2 years and 7 partners from 4 Balkan and Mediterranean countries are participating.

The Interim Executive Board Meeting of LifeWatch-ERIC took place in Melpignano, Lecce, during 26-29 June 2017. This meeting was the first operative session of the ERIC infrastructure, where representatives from Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Greece and Italy, decided on the strategical lines to the operative construction of the infrastructure.

The 1st General Assembly of LifeWatch ERIC, which took place in Seville (Spain) during 8-9 May 2017, elected the interim members of the statutory bodies which will manage the Consortium until the formal ones will be appointed.

Dr Panagiotis Dimitriou - Nikolakis has been awarded his PhD certificate on the "Effects of eutrophication on the benthic ecological status and ecosystem functions" by the University of Crete, which has been co-funded by LifewatchGreece.

Many people are unaware that the great Greek philosopher Aristotle can also be regarded as “the father of marine biodiversity”. Indeed, this “Linnaeus avant la lettre” spent a considerable part of his life studying marine species. In fact, more than 40% of the animals he studied in his zoological works had a marine origin. If Aristotle was still alive today, he would have made an excellent ambassador for modern marine biodiversity research.
